Chipeta Mountain from Marshall Pass was a good quick hit on a day with storms early in the forecast. It is a gentle hike with great early morning views.
If I were to climb Chipeta a second time, I would entertain the idea of riding the approach on the Colorado Trail from Monarch Pass. After summitting, riding down the Rainbow Trail back to Poncha Springs would be a great way to wrap up the day.
10.2m - 3000ft - 5.5hrs
We left the Colorado Trail, headed east and gained Chipeta's south ridge
Once on the ridge we headed straight north over South Chipeta Mountain
This little feature was fun to climb
Quartz keeping us on time - Chipeta's summit in the distance
The tundra glowed green in the morning light
Mount Ouray from Chipeta's summit
On descent, we skipped South Chipeta and dropped south west to the Colorado Trail
If you're a mountain biker, think about riding the approaching on the Colorado Trail from Monarch Pass.
We made it back to Marshall Pass before the hail storm hit
