After two hours on the trail we reached Salmon Lake and surprised our friends (Mac Peters, Alex Atwater, Alex Adams and Ian Garrity) who had camped the night before. They were also planning on summitting East Thorn, Silverthorn and had not yet decided about Rain. After hugs and high fives Andy and I set out on our way for East Thorn's east ridge, Mount Silverthorne and Rain's southwest ridge... The Salmon Lake Cirque Traverse.
As with many other Gore traverses, this one is complex, exposed and navigational... ie. choose your own adventure. The rock is high quality by Colorado standards, generally solid but not perfect.
For East Thorn's east ridge, we found a gully and gained the ridge just after the 5.6 direct start option.
On the east ridge we generally stayed ridge proper and did not make any significant drops. Most of the terrain is class 4 with a bit of low 5 mixed in. Don't let your gaurd down after summitting as the west ridge still holds some spice.
The walk from East Thorn to Silverthorne is straight forward and offers views of Rain, East Thorn and the Zodiac from the north.
The ridge from Silverthorne to Rain is shorter than East Thorn but more difficult. There is more low 5 terrain, more exposure and more complex navigation and decision making. On this ridge we climbed every low 5 / C4 tower and stayed off of anything that felt more difficult. This worked with the exception of the very first tower which we bypassed on the north.
Much of the terrain on both East Thorn and Rain looks more difficult from a distance... so be sure to get your hands on the rock before deciding to take a less efficient option.

The lower section of East Thorn's East Ridge in the morning light. I believe the direct start on this ridge goes at 5.6. We skipped the 5.6 sections.

The scrambling begins on some featured slab in a gully above Salmon Lake

Once we gained the ridge the Zodiac presented itself. Capricorn stands tall

East Thorn's east ridge consists of many towers, knife edges and steep climbs/down climbs
![Thorn silvy rain 1 08]()
We stuck to the ridge all the way up.... no need to drop
![Thorn silvy rain 1 09]()
The terrain was mostly class 4 but there were a few low 5 moves
![Thorn silvy rain 1 10]()
The ridge is deceptively long
![Thorn silvy rain 1 11]()
There are spots with significant exposure... but the rock was solid (for the most part).
![Thorn silvy rain 1 12]()
Up a tower, traverse a knife edge, down a tower, repeat... that seemed to the the pattern all the way up.
![Thorn silvy rain 1 13]()
The Zodiac always demanding attention. "She's a dancer, a romancer, I'm a Capricorn and she's a Cancer"
![Thorn silvy rain 1 14]()
The route often seemed improbable from a distance but was easier than it appeared once we started climbing

A cool tower just north of the ridge... thankfully we didn't have to climb this one
![Thorn silvy rain 1 31]()
Alex climbs the first tower (which we ended up down climbing and bypassing on the north). This was the only class 4 or low 5 tower that didn't go. All other c4/low 5 towers went. We did not climb any of the 5.6ish stuff.

Our day in Mordor was delightful
![Thorn silvy rain 1 33]()
Rain's southwest ridge is more difficult than East Thorn's east ridge. More exposure, more low 5 and more navigation

![Thorn silvy rain 1 35]()
Although we were close there was still plenty of scrambling to go. I think the words at this point were "oh cool... it goes!"

Kinda tedious walking off of Rain's east ridge
![Thorn silvy rain 1 54]()

Still enamored with East Thorn's east ridge

Last little bit of talus hopping before getting to the lake. These boulders were stable... so it wasn't too bad.
